A Sharp Little Hummingbird Constructs a Roofed House

Nests are treetop dwellings that birds build with love and care to nurture their young. Few other natural structures inspire the same feelings of comfort and warmth.

However, this specific soon-to-be mother discovered a really clever technique to make her space more cozier.

In the woods close to her Paraguayan home, conservationist Bianca Caroline Soares frequently spots hummingbird nests perched on branches. But she saw one last spring while out on a stroll that was unlike any she had ever seen.

It had a roof, this one.

Soares was evidently impressed.

Soares told The Dodo, “I saw five hummingbird nests that day, but this was the most clever.”

This hummingbird lived in the loveliest house in the area, thanks to the shade that the leafy roof gave. It also turned out to be an excellent site to raise a brood.

Following that initial discovery, Soares kept returning to the crafty bird’s nest to watch the small family for whom it had been constructed. These visits lasted for several weeks and months.

According to Soares, “She had two hummingbird babies.”

And those newborns certainly benefited from their mother’s careful preparation, especially on the hottest days.

Soares expressed her hope that by seeing the little mom’s careful planning, others will be motivated to better protect the environment.

The hummingbird’s small family benefited greatly from her thoughtfulness. All of her offspring eventually became strong enough to venture out on their own, maybe learning from the layout of their childhood house when it came to creating their own nests:
